The following offers an overview of general criteria that some universities use. Note that whilst they are largely socioeconomic, increasingly race and ethnicity are recognised as requiring additional support.
Pupil Premium
Introduced in 2011 the goal was to identify and provide support on a range of criteria, free school meals, those in care, children of the armed forces parents. A system to identify the disadvantaged.
POLAR – TUNDRA
These are geographical measures of disadvantage. You need to be in quintile 1 to be flagged. So use their online tool to check where you stand. TUNDRA offers more focus for England only.
SES
Key to much disadvantage is Socio-Economic Status (SES). Education, type of job, income support are measured so is a measure of the family’s SES which is then used to judge the child.
ACORN
Similar to POLAR in that it uses a postcode system to assist with admission policies but lacks the transparency of POLAR, universities tell you if it is being used as a part of their assessment.
SIMD
Another postcode system, this one used for Scottish students. A tool that combines 38 measures across 7 domains from heath to housing. provided by the Scottish goverment.
